I’m Julie, owner and hairstylist at Greenhaus Hair Studio. I’ve been behind the chair for more than 14 years, specializing in custom color with a particular love for dimensional, low-maintenance hair. My approach to balayage is less about following a formula and more about creating a color plan that works with your hair, your lifestyle and the way you actually want to maintain it.
What is balayage?
Lived-in balayage is a low-maintenance color technique that grows out softly, letting you go longer between salon visits. Balayage is a highlighting technique where lightener is painted onto the hair to create softer, more natural looking dimension. Unlike traditional highlights, balayage can be placed more intentionally around your natural color to create a softer transition between your roots and lighter pieces. The result can range from subtle, sun-kissed dimension to a much brighter blonde depending on your hair, your starting point and what we’re trying to create.
At Greenhaus, balayage isn’t one-size-fits-all. Placement, brightness and tone are customized for every guest.
Why I love lived-in balayage
I don’t think your hair should require a salon appointment every six weeks just to look good.
Lived-in balayage is designed with the grow-out in mind from the beginning.
That might mean keeping your natural root visible, creating softer transitions, concentrating brightness in certain areas or choosing a tone that continues to look beautiful as it fades.
The goal isn’t simply to make your hair lighter. The goal is to create dimension that makes sense for you.
Balayage vs. highlights
They’re both ways of creating lighter pieces in the hair, but the placement and overall effect can be very different.
Balayage tends to create softer, more graduated dimension with a more natural looking root. It’s often a great choice if you want brightness without a very noticeable grow-out.
Highlights generally create more consistent lightness throughout the hair and can take you brighter from the root. Neither is automatically better.
The right service depends on your starting point, your desired result and how you want your color to grow out. If you’re not sure which one you need, that’s okay. Your consultation and booking form are designed to help determine the best place to start.
Is balayage low-maintenance?
It can be, but it depends on the look we’re creating.
A softer, more lived-in balayage can often be maintained with fewer appointments than an all-over blonde or traditional root-to-end highlight.
Your maintenance schedule will depend on how bright you want to stay, how quickly your hair grows and how much visible grow-out you’re comfortable with.
When I create your color, I’m thinking about the next few months—not just how your hair looks when you leave the salon. That’s one of the biggest differences between simply getting your hair colored and creating a long-term color plan.
Who is balayage good for?
Balayage can be a great option if you:
● Want dimensional color without a harsh grow-out
● Want to brighten your natural hair
● Prefer a lower-maintenance color routine
● Want a softer, blended look
● Don’t want to spend hours in the salon every few weeks
● Are ready to transition away from high-maintenance color
● Want a customized color rather than a cookie-cutter result
It can also be a great starting point if you’re unsure what you actually need.
We’ll look at your current hair, your previous color, your goals and your maintenance preferences before deciding what makes the most sense.
What if my hair has been colored before?
That’s where things can get a little more complicated.
Previous color, box dye, vivid color, old highlights and other chemical services can all affect what is possible in a single appointment. If you’re working with previously colored hair or you’re looking for a significant change, I’ll use your consultation information and photos to determine the best starting point. Sometimes the best color plan is one appointment.
Sometimes it’s a process.I’d rather create a realistic plan than promise something your hair can’t safely do.
How often will I need balayage?
There isn’t one universal schedule.
Some guests come in every 12 weeks to maintain brighter dimension. Others prefer to stretch their appointments several months because their color is designed to grow out softly.
Your ideal schedule will depend on your desired brightness and how much maintenance you want. You don’t have to commit to a constant cycle of appointments every 6 weeks, that’s kind of the point.
What should I book?
